Reupholstering dining room or kitchen chair bottom pads are really very simple and all you need is a screw driver, a hammer, some tacks and new fabric. Most times the original padding or foam can be reused with a little augmentation. Most upholstery shops would charge $30 to $50 for each chair so you can save a bundle by following these steps.
Steps:
1. Remove the seat from the chair
2. Remove the old fabric
3. Check the padding and if it needs to be spruced up a little just add foam or cotton.
4. Using the old fabric pattern measure and cut the new fabric.
5. Lay the fabric upside down on your work table and lay the padding or foam upside down on top.
6. Pull and tack the fabric from the center on each side.
7. Next tack the remainder of fabric to match all around the seat. If you have puckers in the fabric release that tack, adjust and re-tack.
8. The corners can be folded to fit each corner.
9. Flip the pad over and check to make sure all sides look alike.
10. Attach to chair with the original screws and now you're ready to brag to your friends.
Almost any fabric will work for this project, look around the house for any extra fabric pieces you may have from a earlier upholstery job. If you don't have enough for all 4 or 6 chairs try mixing fabric textures or color. The results can be really exciting and certainly a conversation piece.
Good luck and happy upholstering
Hi and thanks for starting this blog. I've been daring to do the job myself but think I'll try it now. Are there any types of fabric that would not be okay for this job?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliment and almost any fabric will work. Remember that spoils can be a problem so I recommend you spray the cushions or pads with a silicone fabric protector such a Scotchgard. Happy upholstering,
